Big, gentle eyes, a friendly nature and a calmness that knows no bounds: school dog Davis is a friendly giant who charms everyone with his calm nature. The Golden Retriever has been working at the Johann-Peter-Hebel School for 7 years and supports class teacher Petra Zeitz in her work three to four days a week.
During class, when the children are seated, Davis often rests on his cushion, which is next to the teacher's desk so the children can see him. He also often lies among the children or in front of the board so he can see everything.
The interaction between children and dogs is clearly regulated. There are pictures on the walls of the classroom and in the school building that illustrate how to deal with Davis.
The children know that "we mustn't be so loud when Davis is in the room." The children have also learned that they should wash their hands after petting and before eating, and that dogs should be petted in the direction of their fur.
The children especially enjoy practicing tricks with Davis and then rewarding him with a treat, but they are only allowed to do this upon request.
In any case, Davis especially enjoys the caresses and cuddles with the children and for many children this physical contact is very important.
